Act III- Julius Caesar

Discuss the character of Brutus.  What is his internal congflict?  How can he be considered the hero?  What are his motives?

37 comments:

  1. The character Brutus was one of Caesars friends and Brutus feels that he should not be kind. Brutus feels this way because he sees him and Caesar as equals. Brutus internal conflict is that he "loves" Caesar and doesn't want to kill him but he knows he has to for the good of the roman people. Brutus's motives are that he needs to do what is right for the people and killing Caesar is the right thing to do cuz it will get him out of the thrown.

  2. Brutus's internal conflict is that if he killed caesar he would be crowned king. He thinks that the roman government will now have to elect a new king. But before he thought he would just be crowned king. His motives are power by removing the person in power. And power by him thinking that he was going to be crowned king. He got rid of Caesar for the good of the people of rome. -Kristian Mcniss Period 3

  3. Brutus's character is changing as the play goes on. Even though the play is named after Julius, In my opinion Brutus is the main character. His internal conflict is changing throughout the play. At first it was whether or not he should kill Caesar or not. Now it is more on the lines of what should he and the group of people that killed him do. I think he can be considered a hero in many ways. If Caesar took power of the people, he would of turned them into slaves, and no one would have any freedom whatsoever. By his group of people killing Caesar, it saved many years of sorrow and pain. His motives were basically what I just said. By killing Caesar, he saved the people from the pain that was going to come from Caesar in control. This Quote is from Act 1, but it shows why Brutus wanted Caesar killed.
" I would not, Cassius, yet i love him well. But wherefore do you hold me here so long? What is it that you would impart to me? if i be aught toward the general good, Set honor in one eye and death i' th' other, And I will look on both indifferently, For let the gods so speed me as I love The name of honor more than I fear death."

Brutus places honor above everything else.Brutus's internal conflict is that he struggles with the decision to murder Caesar. He believes that Caesar should die for the good of Rome though he loves and admires Caesar. Brutus can be considered the hero because he kills Caesar for the good of Rome. Brutus kills Caesar for his ambition to become king, Brutus seeks to keep the old government and kills Caesar for that reason. Brutus also receives letters from Cassius convincing him to kill Caesar because the people of Rome don't want Caesar.

  5. Brutus's internal confict is that he doesn't want to kill Caesar because he loves him, but he also wants the best for the good of the people. He can be considered a hero because he respects Rome, and killed Caesar so that the people could live a good life. Brutus's motives to kill Caesar is his love for Rome, and the good of the people.

  6. Brutus is a very honorable man, he loves the Roman people and would go to hell and back to protect them. He is the only one of the conspirators who's murders Ceaser with selfless intentions. His internal conflict is the fact that he is debating, and trying to justify his part in the conspiracy against Ceaser. He believes that Ceaser has the potential to be a tyrant and to enslave the people. Brutus feels that the only way to liberate the people and stop Ceaser is to kill him before he gains the power of kingship. I feel Brutus could be considered the hero because he is the only one who's intentions are noble. He is trying to keep the Roman people together and is trying to rebuild. Also Brutus is the character who we mostly follow and see his inner thoughts.

  7. Brutus is a very strong minded person. When he thinks something is right and needs to be changed he does so. Without him Caesars death could of never happened and everyones lives could of been completely different in the story. I feel his internal conflict is that he doesnt want to kill caesar out of anger but for the better of the people. Through out the play Brutus is always acting for the best of the people. The people are his motive.

  9. Brutus is the person behind the plot to kill caesar. his internal conflict i would say is wheather or not to kill caesar. his motives for wanting to kill caesar are that he wouldnt do any good for the people of rome. after Brutus and his homeboys kill caesar they give caesar a funeral procession for the people to see. at first the thebians want to crown brutus but after marc antony speaks the thebians all go after the conspiritors and even kill an innocent poet. - keith friel

Well Brutus is one of Caesers friends and he respects the roman people. His internal conflict was that he doesn't want to kill Caesar because he likes him alot, but in the mean time it would be the best descion for the people. He is a hero because he has alot of power from rome. By killing caesar, it would save the city and also save the people. My opinion is that brustus made the right choice so that caesar didnt have enough powe to take control of the city. I think now brutus is the main character.

  11. Brutus character is loyal to Caesar, although he turned against him. Ceasar was his good friend but he was no fit for king. The others conviced him that Caesar was the wrong leader for Rome. Brutus killed him for the good of the people. He quotes that he would also kill himself if it was for the good of Rome.

  12. Brutus, is a very caring, smart person. He thinks of everyone before he thinks about himself. Brutus have different motives for killing Ceaser. He was involved with the conspiracy with cassius , and casca and others,to save the people. Brutus believed that is ceaser were to become king, they would all die as slaves. The other did not like ceaser because they thought that he was just as powerful than they are. So why aren't they being offered to be king.I think that brutus was honestly worried about the people, he wanted everyone to live in peace. But the others were just jealous of what ceaser was being awarded.(II.i.164-185)Brutus is explaining why he takes the actions of killing ceaser. to save the people, not just because he doesn't like ceasar.

Brutus is a very wise man throughout the story, he shows alot of charisma. people tend to follow him alot. brutus can be considered the charecter of the story because he saves the whole roman empire from a tyrant, he and his conspirators basically saved rome from being almost slaves. brutus's motivation to kill caesar is the good of all the people in rome.

  14. Brutus who is a friend to Caesar however he doesn't think that Caesar is fit to be a king. Brutus kills him stop him from gaining too much power,so that he would not become brutal or to prideful. Brutus's internal conflict is wither or not to join the conspiracy. The reason he doesn't want to join the conspiracy is because he doesn't want to kill Caesar for the same reasons as they do.

Brutus is genuinly a nice guy. He love's Caesar, but is manipulated into thinking the people of Rome want him dead and that it's a bad thing for him to be king. I read the end of the play already and Antony says, Brutus is really a caring person because he acted out of the good of the people, not jealousy. He is friends with Caesar, for a long time too. He went as far to say he love's him as friends. The decision for him to kill him tore him apart inside. I think Brutus wouldn't have joined the plot if he hadn't seen the fake letter's from Casca and Cassius.

  16. Discuss the character of Brutus. What is his internal congflict? How can he be considered the hero? What are his motives?

In my own opinion Brutus is a very caring human being. Brutus puts other peoples happiness before his very own. But like most people Brutus has his very own internal conflicts. His internal conflict is whether or not to join the conspiracy and upraise against the great Caesar. Brutus's motives are for the good of the people. His only choice of stopping Caesar from being king and getting power hungry just to destroy the own empire he loves. And in his opinion thos motives are good enough to join the conspiracy and kill the might Caesar.

  17. Brutus is one of Caesar’s friends. His internal conflict is that, he cannot decide whether to join the plan to kill him or not. He loves Caesar but he does not want him to rule Rome, he is looking out for the people. Brutus should be considered a hero because even though he loved Caesar, he killed him for his love of Rome and to save everyone else. “Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.”(III.ii.20-21)

  18. Brutus has many conflicts. One internal conflict is that he loves Caesars but feels that he needs to kill him for the good of Rome. He could be considered the hero a couple ways. One way is that a lot of people believed that Caesar would turn them all into slaves so he saved them from being slaves. He is also a hero just because he will do whatever he can to protect Rome. His motive is to kill Caesar for the good of Rome.

  19. Brutus is an interesting character. He lives and dies for Rome, and only Rome. He is torn between killing Caesar or letting him live. As the story progresses, Brutus finds that he must come to terms with killing Caesar or be against everything he has ever lived by. Brutus uses this as his motive to carry out the murder. By killing Caesar, he is considered a hero by the people(for a time).

  20. Brutus is a good friend of Caesar and his internal conflict throughout the play was him deciding if he should kill Caesar or not. His motives for wanting to or not wanting to kill Caesar are he thought that it would be a good thing to kill him because he felt it would be the best thing for Rome, but at the same time, he was also very good friends with Caesar. But, in the end, he ruined his friendship with Caesar and killed him, "Et tu, Brute?" (III.i.177).

  21. Brutus's character is that he is honorable, trustworty, and wise. His internal conflict is whether to join the conspiracy to kill Caesar or not. He is considered to be the hero because he is the won who will change history for the better good and that he has a flaw just like a tragic hero in that he is to honorable and can be easlily manipulated. His motive for killing Caesar is that it is for the good of Rome. The motives of the other conspirators are power, greed, and jelausoly. Brutus in the end actually does the wrong thing by siding with the conspirators. - Cody Dooley period 3

Brutus's internal conflict was that he was struggling with the fact that Caesar needed to be killed. He was extrememly brave for having to kill a friend who he cared for, because he knew the well being of Rome was more important. Brutus can be considered the hero because he killed Caesar, which wasnt out of his own hate, but because he knew it was what had to be done. Brutus was considered to be a good friend of Caesar, and it makes him even more of a hero, because he forgot that and still killed him, which was what was needed. His only motive was to do what was right for the people, which was selfless.

  24. The character of Brutus is a very honorable one but once in a while he seems like the enemy. Also, he is the only one that does not immediately joins in with the conspiracy which shows he has some rational judgement. His internal conflict is that he must decide whether or not to kill Caesar. He can be considered the hero for several reasons first of all he kills Caesar "for the people" which is an honorable. Another internal conflict was that he might not go through with it. Also, because he is considered to not do it for the power reason.

He loves Caesar but feels that he is getting too powerful and that killing him will "prevent the people of Rome from dying as slaves". 31. In "Julius Caesar" Brutus plays a huge part. I would describe Brutus as strong willed and very opinionated though out the story. Being these things, Brutus has a very dangerous internal conflict. This is whether of not he should kill Caesar. His motives for killing Caesar are that he doesn't think Caesar is fit to rule Rome, and that Brutus loves Rome more than he will ever love Caesar. One the other hand, Brutus has nothing against Caesar personally. Brutus can be seen as the hero because when he does decide to kill Caesar, he does it for the good of the people, not for his personal enjoyment.

  32. Brutus seems to be the main character in the play. Brutus is all about honor and saving the people. He puts the well being and safety of Rome before himself. That aspect is what makes him a hero. His conflict is whether or not he should join the conspiracy and kill Caesar. He has no personal reason to kill him, but knows that it is for the good of the people. He doesn't want to do anything that is doshonorable, which is one of his motives.

  35. Brutus is an honorable Roman nobleman who sees honor as the most important value. He cares about Rome more than himself. He considers himself as the one who is responsible to save the city whenever it is in danger. Because of his honor and pride, he develops his internal conflicts, which are whether to kill Caesar or not. He personally admires Caesar as a brave and brilliant leader, however, he does not want Rome to be ruled under a dictator. Therefore, he constantly struggles between these two thoughts and is finally driven by his honor, and decides to kill Caesar with other conspirators, who commit it for their pure jealousy. It is evident to see throughout the play that Brutus tries to do whatever is the best for the Romans and is even willing to offer his life if that would be the case. His motives are distinctly different from the other conspirators, which are purely honor and loyalty to Rome. He could be considered the hero of the play because he does what he thinks would be right to save the people, not because of jealousy, not because he wants power, but because he wants Rome to be a free city. He is a distinct contrast to the other conspirators because all the others have their own purposes behind the assassination.

He feels Caesar needs to be killed for the better of the people, which is one way you could consider him the hero. He predicts Caesars head will become too big and he will abuse his power, so he has to stop it from happening.
