  1. My over all mood of the play Oedipus the King is good. I feel it is a good book/play. It is a very hard read though. Like there are alot of words that i really dont understand. In the play when Oedipus kills his father but he dosnt know it was him i think that is really neat.

  2. I think the overall mood of the play is dramatic. I think this because throughout the play Oedipus is trying to find out who murdered the former king Laius. And through the play only small hints and riddles are given as to who had murdered him. Also, of the prophecy given to him that said " you are fated to couple with your mother, you will bring a breed of children into the light no man can bear to see- you will kill your father, the one who gave you life." that made a crazy plot twist ending with him hunting down the murder when he himself was the killer. then, if that wasn't enough, all the trouble he went through to make sure the prophecy never happened was found out to be the start of his whole situation.

  3. I would say the overall mood of the play is negative. Throughout the majority of the play everything has been upsetting. For starters all these people of Thebes are dying. They are dying of a plauge and only one man can save them. But that one man is their king/ their savor. Opedius says that if he is unsuccessful he says he will share the same fate as his people. If opedius dies then these people have nothing and their fates will be sealed. "If I shall fall unsuccessful i shall share the fate of you, my people".

  6. After reading the first scene of the play I believe the mood of the story is worried. In the story the priest of Zeus tells Oedipus " the city is drowning and almost dead". "The city has been plagued". The people of Thebes are worried for there well being and safety. They are turning towards Oedipus for help and security. Citizens of Thebes are almost looking at Oedipus as there savior.

  7. The overall mood of the play is sad, hopeful, but most of all depressing. I say this because I feel like all they talk about is murder or killing someone or something. however sometimes they do have a hint of hopefulness and example of this would be when the priest and the people arrive in front of the royal house of Thebes, and the priest begs Oedipus the King to help the city of Thebes and stop the plague. In reply Oedipus gives the people hope by saying that he will look for the murderer which in turn will cure the plague. "You can trust me; I am ready to help,I'll do anything. I would be blind to misery not to pity my people kneeling at my feet." -Oedipus the King

  8. I think the overall mood of the play would be sad. Oedipus doesn't know that he killed his father. He's trying to figure out who did, and he obviously won't find the answer. I feel bad for him. Also, there is a plague in Thebes. Many people are suffering. "Well, I know you are sick to death, all of you, but sick as you are, not one is sick as I."

  9. There is a lot of different emotions through out the play. You see a lot of confusion and denial in the characters. So far there really hasn't been any positive moods in the play. I think that the overall mood of the play would be anger and fear. There are also many forms of irony that can contribute to the mood.
" Speak out, speak to us all. I grieve for these, my people, far more then I fear my own life. "

  10. There are a lot of emotions in this play. The overall moods would have to be anger, denial and sadness. There hasn't been ANY positive thoughts or feelings yet in the play. Also I think there is some confusion as to who killed Oedipus' father. Irony contributes to the emotions in this play as well. "Thebes is dying, look, her children stripped pity... generations strewn on the ground unburied, unwept, the dead spreading death" Thebes is going through a really hard time. They are all turning to Oedipus to save it. It seems to me everything is falling apart, but they still believe in him to save them.

  11. I think the overall mood of the play is sad. Oedipus is set on finding out who killed his father. The sad part is, he will never find an answer because he was the one who killed him. Also, there is a plague in Thebes. Many people are suffering. "Well I know you are sick to death, all of you, but as sick as you are, not one is sick as I."

  12. The overall mood of the play is vengeance and justification. It is this because the only way to end the suffring of Thebes is too kill or banish the murder. This is vengeance and justifiacation. Oedipus has to avenge the last kings death and justifys it by he is going to exile him. The justification of that is it will end the suffring of the Thebians."Nothing to fear, even if he must denounce himeself, let him speak up and so escape the brunt of the charge he will suffer no unberable punishment, nothing worse than exile.

  13. I think the mood of the play so far is fear. Oedipus says "Pain strikes each of you alone, each in the confines himself no other". This is because the people of Thebes are dying from a horrible plague. I also think that when Tireseas accuses Oedipus of the kings murder he has a sense of fear. I think he was feeling that way because he did not understand as to why he called him out. The fear and confusion in the play sets the mood.

  14. The overall mood of the play is fear of the unknown. What I mean by that is the people along with Oedipus don't know what's going to happen to them or Thebes. The reason for this is because they know what's happening at this point such as "The crops are dieing and babies are still dieng in the womb" (pg.257). Also, what the people fear most is whats going to happen to them. They also don't know what's going to happen to Thebes is going to burned or is it once and for all be completly shut off from the outside world? This is the reason the mood is the fear of the unknown because the people have no idea what's going to happen to them.

  15. The overall mood of the play is somewhat helpless. There is really nothing they can do about anything that is happening. All they can do is pray, and try to stay alive. Oepidus is trying his hardest to help everyone out, all he can do is try.

  16. The overall mood of the play is curiosity to who was the killer or king Laius. A quote from the book that i thought showed the mood was "among the foremost men in daily matters and in dealings with the gods." The sphinx stoped thebes from tracking down the murder of Laios at the time of the murdered caused a bunch of stress because they did not know who the killer was and had to go to Oedipus for help and in my opionion the mood of the play was plain curiocity because they were searching for the killer.

  18. The overall mood of the play was exciting. You never knew what was going to happen next and everything that happened was surprising. There was also a lot of suspense throughout the play.

  19. The overall mood of the play to me is curiousness and anger, I think everyone's curious because we want to know who the murderer of King Laius is, the mood gets angry because no matter how much Oedipus tries nobody wants to tell him any details, and when a guy named Tiresias finally says something he leaves out the important parts and makes you think which makes you go back to curiosity. Just like how on page 266 he says "I rather not cause pain for you or me so why this... useless interrogation? you'll get nothing from me." those words made Oedipus mad and he started to scream at him so then again Tiresias says " What will come will come even if I shroud it all in silence." Oedipus begins to get curious and started "what will come? you're bound to tell me." & the response was "I'll say no more.. etc.etc and like I said ,to me the mood is just an ongoing circle of curiosity and anger.

  20. The overall mood of Oedipus is suspensful and mysterious. I think so because he has to try to find the killer of the preveous king and he knows they are in the city of Thebes. Especially when Tiresius says, "you are the reason for the plague" to Oedipus. This make Oedipus wonder who could be the killer if he's the reason for the play. It has to be someone close to him

  21. the overal mood is a tragedy. i know this because most greek plays are tragedys and tragic things happen in this play. it is irony too. because he is trying to find the killer of King Laios the entire story and when he calls on Tiresias she says " you are the one who killed King Laios." so it is also ironic. its even more ironic becuse King Laios is really Oedipus's real father.

  22. Tyler tomlin-

The mood of the play is very calm at the begining but then in the middle of the play is when things start to change alot. There are alot of arguements and alot of fights. No one agrees with each other becasue of what happened.

  23. The play has a gloomy mood due to the predicament Thebes is in. The play is centered around death and tragedy, from the plague in Thebes to Laius being murdered. "Thebes, city of death, one long cortege and the suffering rises wails for mercy rise and the wild hymn for the Healer blazes out clashing with our sobs our cries of mourning". (pg,260)

  24. I think the overall mood of the play is terror and panic. All of the townspeople are scared for there lives and have no idea what to do. In result, they turn to King Oedipus but this time he has no answer to the soltion. For example, the townspeople announce "Oedipus, king, we bend to you, your power, we implore you, all of us on our knees: find us strength, rescue!" In reply King Oedipus explains that he is not exactly sure of how to solve the problem, which just adds more panic and fear to the people. In the end, i think the play's overall mood is that of fear and panic which points towards the case in figuring out the curse that plagues the town.

  25. I think the overall mood of the play is ironic, tragic, intriguing and conflicting. This is an interesting story filled with conflicts and mysteries that seem to be. However, for the readers, it is quite ironic since we know the truth that the characters in the play don't know about until the very end. As the Tierisias reveals the truth, it also indicates the start of the tragic downfall of Oedipus from the moment forward.
There are serveral quotes that support my point:
"I say to you: That man, whom you have long sought,
threatening him and naming as the murderer
of Laius, that man is here."
"He will be revealed to live with his children
as brother and father both; and to his parents
he is both his wife’s son and lord and his father’s
    fellow-sower and slayer. "
"But, no, until I see an account
    confirmed, never would I
agree when men are speaking slanders.
    For once the winged maiden
    came openly against him,
    and he was seen wise
and found friendly to the city; therefore
by the judgment of my mind
    never will he merit suspicion."
(I did not know that we needed our books to quote for this post and I did not bring my book home tonight with me. So I looked Oedipus the King up online, trying to find full text of the exact translation, however, I couldn't find any. I quoted from a similar version translated by J. E. Thomas)

  26. the mood of this play is dramatic. one reason it is dramatic is because oedipus killed his father and didnt know it. when tiresias told him he killed his father he denied it. it was also dramatic when he cursed himself. " I curse myself as well... if by any chance he proves to be an intemate of our house, here at my hearth, with my full knowledge, may the curse i just called down on him strike me!" this play also shows irony.

  27. The mood of the play is dramatic and ironic. the play is ironic because Oedipus's fate was that he will kill his father and marry his mother and it came true. Also after the oracle Tiresias told him about the truth he didnt except it and told tiresias he lost his powers. The play was dramatic because Oedipus Puts a curse on himself. " I curse myself as well... if by any chance he proves to be an intemate of our house, here at my hearth, with my full knowledge, may the curse i just called down on him strike me!" All Together this play shows irony and drama.

  28. In my opinion, the overall mood of the play is sad and depressing. I feel this way because the citizens of Thebes all pray to the gods for help when they easily can just man up and do things on there own. The gods won't always be there to help them. Oedipus states to the people that he is going to do everything he can to make the town happy and safe.

  29. I think the mood of the play is terror. The priest and all of the people of the town are scared to death of the plague. They went to Oedipus for help but he could not help them. The priest asked Oedipus "what do you know?" Everybody in the Thebes including Oedipus seems very scared of what is happening because they do not know how to stop it. The mood of the play is panic and fear.

  30. In my opinion, everyone is miserable and lazy. I feel this way because no one will man up and try and defend there town.Instead they all sit in church and pray for a miracle. That's not how it works. Oedipus trys everything he can to help, but he failed to find the murderer of the king.

"if a man's contemptuous, and goes along with acts and speaks without respect for what is right and doesn't revere statues of gods, then let a sorry fate destroy him - for this perverse pride - since he unjustly reaps rewards, does not respect what's godly."

  31. The overall moode is very sad and depressing. all it talks about is killing and finding the killer, for example when Oedipus says that he promises to find the killer and if he doesn't then he will suffer the same fate as the city.

  33. I think over all this story is just one big downer, no one comes out happy. Oedipus blinds him self. Jocasta kill herself. Creon becomes king even though he never wanted to be one. All of Oedipus family either ends up dead or cursed. No one is happy in this story.

  34. I think the mood of the play is dramatic and ironic. I think this because during the entire play, occurrences happen upon Oedipus that makes him and you believe that you are closing upon the answer, but at times you are farther away than what you started. Ironic happenings take place, like when Oedipus tries to avoid his parents, but it turns out that they aren't his parents at all. Or, when he inadvertently kills his own father, the one that he is trying to find the murderer to. An example of both of these are when Creon says "In this land, said the god; Who seeks shall find; who sits with folded hands or sleeps sleeps is blind.
