Characteristics of chinese literature can be chinese poetry. They are often about nature daily events. They are seen in class because they have the same meaning. Also, the short stories we have read are all discusted about chinese literature. More characteristics are that its very hard to understand because it doesnt make sence. I beilive it does teach morals tho." You dragged your feet when you went out ! "

  2. After this week of reading chinese literature ive learned that in china, parents are more harsh. In one of the stories we have read a girl runs away and her family actually shunes her. Thats crazy. Her mother pushed her to the point of running away. "aii-ya stupid girl". Thats what her mother and her mothers friends scream at her as she runs away. I guess in china they push success in strong ways.

  3. Chinese Literature is based on religion. In the chapter that we read of "Rules of the Game" confucianism is shown. The basic relationship, old and young, is shown in "Rules of the Game". It is shown through the relationship of Waverly and Lau Po. When Lau Po teaches Waverly how to play chess, they take on the role of master and subject. "By the end of the summer, Lau Po had taught me all he knew, and I had become a better chess player." The relationship between Lau Po and Waverly is symbolizes confucianism teachings.

  4. Some characteristics of Chinese Literature are Wu Wei or let nature take it's course. Taoism encourages people to ignore the dictates of society; Buddhism has that same rule the only difference is Buddhism focuses more on dreams, personal memories & meditations of the past. "Modern followers of Taoism embrace the philosophy credited to Lao-tzu: Living a peaceful life of non-action in harmony with nature." (Tao Te Ching by: Lao-tzu)
A example of when we saw the wu wei rule would be in the story Substance, Shadow, and Spirit; in the story substance was worrying about dying that is his biggest fear so he is spending most of his life trying to find a way to stop himself from dying. Shadow is worried about his reputation and what legacy he will leave behind, so he isn't stressing out about dying because he knows it is going to happen either way. Spirit is what follows the wu wei rule because he is kind of in the middle of substance and shadow, spirit says that you should accept dying because it is going to happen but in the same turn you shouldn't spend your whole life stressing over your reputation. spirit thinks you should just live a simple, happy, and peaceful life.

  5. Chinese Literature often shows signs of the different religions in China. It will show signs of Confucianism and Taoism in it. Some of the poems such as the Analects stress respect towards elders, and other poems stress harmony with nature and following the wu wei from Taoism. "...Spirit show how, by following Nature, we may dissolve this bitterness" (T'ao Ch'ien 4-5). Following nature is a Taoist belief and is shown in Substance, Shadow, and Spirit as well as other poems we read.

  6. Some Characteristics of Chinese literature is Wu Wei or to let nature take its course. This is highly believed in Taoism, also it is believed that
one should respect, not fear death. This is also believed in buddhism, these beliefs occur a lot throughout the poem Substance Shadow and Spirit, in which the author explains how one should live his life peacefully and when the inevitable finally comes one should embrace it instead of stressing. In the analects Confucias explains how one should respect others and try and live peacefully.

Do you want improve the world? I don't think it can be done" If you tamper with it you'll ruin it"
What I take from a lot of what I have read, it seems like these poems are used to sedate the public. It seems to me that the it is made to brainwash the masses in to being okay with the government that they have even though they could change this for the better. Now I am not picking on the Chinese government, this can be applied to America too. What if instead of the occupying wall street the protesters just gave up because you shouldn't change the world.

  8. In chinese literature , it tells you how to live your life. In the story "Substance, Shadow, and Spirit" it argues over how you should live your life. Substance says you should live your life with nature and live it to the fullest. For example here it says " Mountains and rivers never change. But herbs and trees in perpetual rotation. Are renovated and withered by the dews and frosts: And manthe wise, man the divine- Shall he alone escape the law?" Substance is a way of living your life.

  9. Chinese Literature shows that there are more then one religion in china. Such as, Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Waverly also loves to play chess and her mother does not let her play chess because it reminds her mother of her child hood. So her mother and her mothers frind were screaming at her when she was running away and what they said was "aii-ya stupid girl". I think her mother should support her daughter in things that she likes to do and should not discipline her for playing chess. -Jeff Ritter

  10. Some characteristics are let nature take it's course Wu Wie and poems and harmony. The whole point to the religions is to live a peaceful and happy life. Confucianism and Taoism are kind of the same. They both are about respect. Taoism is more spirit and nature. And Confucianism is more respecting your friends family adults and everyone.

  11. Some characteristics of Chiniese literature is the religous or philisophical beliefs seen in it. For Example, in the poem Subsatance,Shadow, and Spirt you can see Toaist beliefs in the poem. "You better go where fate leads." This shows the belief of Wu Wei in the Toaist philosophy which mean let nature take its course. Also, you can see the Confucius beliefs of respect and discipline in the writtings of the Analects. "If there is no felling of respect, wherein lies the diffrence?" This shows who respect was very important in Confucanism. Finally, you can see the literary term persona in the poem Substance,Shadow, and Spirt by that each when is a diffrent personality that is independent of each other.

  12. When we read "Rules of the Game", it showed the characteristic of determination. Determination is shown throughout the other Chinese works we have read in class, but particularly a lot in this story. An example of determination is how Waverly learns and masters the game of chess even though her mother did not believe in her, "Aii-ya! Stupid girl!" is what her mother said to her. It shows how determined she is when she plays anyway.

  13. Chinese Literature can be shown in poetry. Chinese poetry is often about nature and daily events."...Spirit show how, by following Nature, we may dissolve this bitterness" (T'ao Ch'ien 4-5). Taoists follow nature. That belief is shown in Substance, Shadow, and Spirit and other poems and things we have read.

  14. In the story "Rules Of the game" Chinese Literature is shown in religion. Confucianism is shown. Old and Young is how it is shown. When the little girl goes to the park to play chess she plays with a old man. Her brothers didn't want to play with her anymore so that is why she went out to find someone with more wisdom to play with. "By the end of the summer, Lau Po had taught me all he knew....."

  15. The characteristics of Chinese Literature are mainly based off of their Religon whether it be Confucianism or Taiosm. You see these beliefs alot in the peom Substance,Shadow and Spirit. In this peom you see the beliefs of the religions come to life in the conversations. The parts you can pick out is Nature, Reputation and the Afterlife which is huge in Chinese Religions. Also, another thing in the Joy Luck Club book that you see the mother push the girl to the breaking point and making her run away. After this is when she says "aii-ya stupid girl". And that is not right because the mother did that to her.

  16. From leaning Chinese literture in class, or learned that chines people have a totally different way of life than Americans do. Stories that we have read in class, gives me a little taste kf how Chinese people live their lives."Do unto others how you want done to you". Treat people the way you want to be treated.

  17. Chinese litrature is often shown through religion. The poems we did were basically shown throghConfucianism and Taoism. confusionism is basically telling you how to live your life and respect elders. taoism is just going with the flow of things. another religion that we did was buddhism. we didnt read any plays about it but in buddhism depending on how you live your life is where your going to go when you die. "By the end of the summer, Lau Po had taught me all he knew, and I had become a better chess player." The relationship between Lau Po and Waverly is symbolizes confucianism teachings.

A characteristic of chinese literature is that it includes sadness along with happiness. It seems that a lot of stories confront having something taken away from you when you have it. For example, "At sixteen you departed,
You went into far Ku-to-yen, by the river of swirling eddies,
And you have been gone five months.
The monkeys make sorrowful noise overhead." (The River-Merchant's Wife: A Letter) This passage is about how the speaker loved her husband, but he had to leave, and she was very sad. But before that, the speaker was happy with her husband, and loved him.

  19. After reading about chinese liturature i can easily mach it to 'Rules of the game.' This demanstrates the relationships mentioned in confucianism. The relationship old and young stands out the most though. This happens between the mother and daughter. The mother is waverlys superior and she must show respect even when she calls her stupid. "Aii-ya stupid girl!"

  23. The characteristics of Chinese literature are shown through the emphasis of the relationship between the nature and humans and of different philosophies. In many selections we have read, different values and principles are stressed. As in Tao Te Ching, the main belief is Wu Wei, or letting nature take its own course. This theme can be seen in virtually everywhere in Tao Te Ching and other Taoism literature. Such as "The Master sees things as they are, without trying to control them. She lets them go their own way, and resides at the center of the citcle." Whereas in Confucianism, respect and responsibility are emphasized, as it is written in the Analects, "Never do to others what you would not like them to do to you." These two major philosophies influenced other Chinese literature works, demonstrating respect theme in the Rules of the Game and the River merchant's wife: a Letter.
