What would make a good, arguable statement about your research topic?  How do you plan on formulating your thesis statement?

I can argue that Dizzy gilespie was one of the best trumpet players of all time. The work he put into it was amazing. He thought the way of playing his music was the way of life. Everyday and night thats all he did because he says practice makes perfect. I don't think no one else was better then him in his day. If he thought he couldnt do something then he would make it happend.

  2. A good arguable statement about Nikki Giovanni would be how she grew up with a childhood and part adulthood being discriminated against because of her skin color, and how she dealt with the discrimination. When Nikki Giovanni was a young child she couldn’t go to certain school, she couldn’t drink out of the same water fountain as a person of a different color as her especially white people. As Nikki got older she found new ways to deal with discrimination, the ever changing world and most of all people, the way she dealt with all of this is thru poetry. She felt as if it was an outlet for her feelings. I’m going to formulate a thesis by combining all of this information into a sentence or a few sentences.

  4. i believe that a good arguable thesis about Richard Wright would be his struggle to become and writter. Also, that what he faced as a child growing up in the south. He was poor and faced racial discrimination. This could be a good arguable thesis because it is a easy subject to talk about. We know alot about what happened in the south in the early 1900's. Lastly, there is alot of facts and biographies on him all over the place. It is a very easy subject to go off of that thesis.

  5. i plan on arguing the way she got through all the stuff she did and came out on top and then got sccused of being to happy.I plan on doing this by showing the hardships she had to over come in her life. Then say the things about how people wish they saw a sad side from her.But why would she ever go back to being sad? why bring back the feeling she was running away from?I think i will be able to argue this topic very well with the sorces i had looked up and kept.

  6. A good thesis about Louis Armstrong would be how he and his music affect so many people. He grew up with a lot of hardship and then had to fight for his opportunities to become so great. This is a narrow yet broad topic that I feel is good to use.

i can argue that nat king cole was one of the most beloved and talented performer of his time. He had alot of natural talent because he was so good and he never had a professional teacher. the only person that helped him learn piano was his mother. He had many record companies that wanted to sign him and he recorded many big hits in his time. He was also one of the first african americans to have his own tv show that even in his time was watched by white families

  8. Lucille Clifton is an African American poet. The death of her mother helped her bloom as a writer. Clifton was more sensitive and wrote with a lot of deeper emotions. The result of this being Clifton becoming an award winning poet. I feel that this event also made Clifton have a different view on everthing. I am going to use this to contribute to my thesis and then continue to explain their relationship and how their love bettered Clifton's future.

  9. I belive that a good arguable these about gwendolyn brooks would be that when she was a kid she was in a all white school.she encountered racial prejudice in her neighborhood from the neighbors. the subject of racism in an all whit school is a very good way for a thesis.

  10. Things that would make a good arguable statement about my research topic are including the fact of racism durring my person, Louis Armstrongs time and how it affected him. I plan on creating my theisis statement by finding certain things that Louis Armstrong did because of the racism and slavery, how he treated others, how racism affected his music and how he grew up affected these things too.

  11. What would make a good, arguable statement about your research topic? How do you plan on formulating your thesis statement? Well a arguable statement I've been thinking about using is that you can succeed in life no matter what living situation you are in. My topic Jelly Roll Morton's father left him at a young age, and him and his mother didnt have alot of money growing up but he still grew up to be one of the best musicians in jazz. He is a legend in the music world.

  12. Michael Jackson is one of the most Controversial superstars of all time. There are so many things that can be used in an argument when discussing Michael Jackson. The most obvious answer being the whole incident at his ranch envolving a 13 year old boy. Michael Jackson was both pyshically and mentally abused as a child so I plan on making my statment something along the lines of "Michael Jackson's childhood affected who he was as an adult".

  13. my thesis would say that if my poet did not exist the world of poetry would not be the same today and we may not have other historical writings. without my poet many others may not have come about.- keith friel

  14. The well-rounded, well-known poet Nikki Giovanni started writing about treating people equally because that was something she never really had the chance to experience. And as a result, she wrote her feelings toward being discriminated against in poem form for everyone to read.

  15. With Countie Cullen I can argue that he went through alot to where he ended up in the end. From what I have read he went through a whole lot as a child. Everything was just a mystery and it still is today. I mean it is not even sure where he was born, and where he went to College. But whatever he did made him a very successful man. He was a poet, author, anthologist, etc. I think Countie Cullen can arguably be one of the most successful people in this world for what he went through.

  16. I could formulate my thesis around how jelly roll morton's claiming to have created jazz and his tendencies may have came from the parenting he received as an child. His mother dying and him being kicked out as a child could of forced him to create a new persona. Though when finalizing my thesis i should make sure that i have a good amount of quotes and information to go off of and that my point is arguable. I need to make sure that it isn't too broad either or else my paper would end up being very long and hard to write or just not relevant to my thesis. The first thing i plan on doing is to get everything important i can find on him before finalizing my thesis.

  17. The poet that I'm writing about could have many different topics that I could talk about. I plan on writing my thesis statement on how smart of a woman she was. She was a very inspiring woman and was living proof that hard work pays off. She had graduated High school at the age of 16 at the top of her class. I think by the information that I have withheld, writing my thesis statement will be easy and very planned out.

  18. A good arguement for Nat king Cole would be many things like how he propley should not of droped out of high school.Becouse he could of had many things come to him if he had a proper education. He should not of smoke like 4 cigarettes a day, he thought it made is voice deeper but it did not.If he did not drop out of high school for a big band with his brother he propely could of got a better life.

  19. A good aruguement for the person that I am reseaching, is that he has a bad reputaion. Not a lot of people know his story, and what he has been through. everyone thinks that he is just this rapper from brooklyn, that sells drugs. I plan on formulating my thesis statement, by just saying basically don't judge a book by it's cover. You can't judge someone without knowing their story.

  20. My thesis statement about Langston Hughes could talk about how his father didn't want him to become a writer and told him he would never make a living following his dream being a poet. It could state that Langston didn't listen to his father and followed his dream and proved him wrong. Then I could talk about how his poetry and what his life was like and what he writes about. With the information I looked up I can state many facts and write about all the information I found. The arguement in the thesis statement is going to be well writen.

  21. I think a good arguable statement about Alice Walker would be about how she went through hard times in her life, such as slavery and discrimination. I could say that her books really touch people, and they show all the emotions she was feeling. She talks a lot about racism and how it affected her life and many other lives. I could say that she is the kind of person that can really relate to other peoples feelings. She can also help people overcome hard times. Her books really portray the lives of many African American.

  23. Im going to argue about how Ralph Ellisons first Novel, Invisible Man in 1952 was an African American classic of that time period. I want to show this by talking about things he did before he wrote that novel. Invisible Man addresses many of the social and intellectual issues facing African Americans in the early twentieth century. This includes the relationship between black identity and Marxism. 24. The person im researching is rita dove. A thesis statement i may argue regarding this person is how diverse and extensive her knowledge of literature and the world is despite her setbacks in life growing up as an african american women growing up in a prodominately white neighborhood. Another arguement i may have is one dealing with how her life experiances led to her deep and imaginative poetry. How the strong figures of her life and experiances show up progressivly through her many works. How she shows vividly the deep yet subtle struggles a women goes through. The battle within that is constantly there like a silent whisper in the back of your mind. those are just a few of the things i could right about, or maybe even combine a few.

  25. For my research paper a good arguable topic would be how Duke Ellington has impacted other musicans. Then make it my thesis statement and explain the ways he has formed original jazz. I will contintue to talk about the people he has effected in my research paper . In the research paper I plan on stating the things from his before he became famous. Then compare it too how sucsessful he became from his expirences.

  26. A good argueable statement about Ella Fitzgerald is that she is one the greatest jazz singers of all time. Her most famous song in my mind is "A-Tisket,A-Tasket" and critics say it may be the greatest jazz song of all time. I plan on formulating my thesis statement by including her jazz career. Also, including her early childhood hardships will show by where her musical thinking comes from. The reason for that is because she includes her feelings from the past into music and that why she is so talented and not many musicians can do that. I do agree with the music critics in believing that she is one of the best jazz singers of all time.

  27. June Jordan based all of her works on the way she lived her life. all the experiences she lived through influenced her writing in some way. Jordan wanted nothing but for her opinion to be heard and taken into consideration. it mainly involved the argument between balcks and whites and men and women. she was looked up to by so many. her works and writing will always be remembered.

I am writing about Margaret Walker. Her childhood was filled with discrimination and lost opertunities until she went to college and was recognized by a famous author. she then went north from New Oreleans to persue a degree in english. She recived a B.A in English when she was just 19. She wrote most of her books on suffering and pain of blacks in the civil war and even afterward up to the end of the oppresion against them, which she was alive and also wrote about. I feel this would be a good topic to argue about Maraget Walker.

My research topic the the "genius", Ray Charles. A good arguable statement for this topic would be that Ray Charles had many obstacles he had to overcome in his life and career. Ray Charles had to deal with addiction to heroin. Also he was blind most of his life. A good thesis would be Ray Charles had many obstacles he had to overcome such as blindness. It mad an impact on his great career.

  30. I'm going to begin to formutlate my thesis statement by researching the difficulities she faced being an African American woman in the time period of sexism and racism were at its peak. She wrote books to voice her opinion on that matter. So by doing so, it was very controversial. I think that'd be a good and solid place to start. I think that this topic and what she faced will be a very easy and widely exp, lored topic to argue.

  31. I believe a good arguable thesis for Toni Cad Bambara would have been how people and the events around her, influenced the way she wrote her stories. With most African Americans in the middle of the last century, many were discriminated by their race. This is a good subject because of all the information that can be used to explain my argument. Also the events of the view of the discrimination of a black women would be an interesting view to base my thesis on.

  32. a good arguable topic about my research paper would be to bringup a topic on billie holiday that is often debated. Billie Holiday died of causes relating to heavy drug and alcohol abuse. Some people believe she died of natuarl causes more then from drug abuse so that would be a good arguable topic. The way i would get my thesis statement is to use one simple line that would sumarize the challenges that Billie Holiday faced. Billie's drug and alcohol abuse affected her careet so something that would sum up her life and how its affected by drugs would be a good thesis statement.

  33. A good arguable statement on Ella Fitzpatrick would be if she is actually the best female jazz singer ever. She is known as "the lady of song" and people possibly disagree with this statement. I plan on making my thesis statement something along the lines of Ella Fitzpatrick is a lengendary jazz singer and she is the best ever to be in the buisness. She earned her title as "the lady of song" and she is a great preformer.

Sammy Davis Jr was a young, amazing singer.
Just because of his race people looked down on him and didnt give him a chance. If they listened to him they would understand how talented he really was. My thesis is going to be about his life and the path his carrer took him. I have plenty of backround information so it shouldnt be too difficult.

  35. I have Biggie Smalls. For my thesis statement I might do something along the lines of the meanings behind his songs. Some of his songs are written because when he was younger some people told him he would never amount to anything. He ended up rich and famous.

  36. Though I don't have an approved thesis statement yet, I know the direction that I'll be going in. I want to discuss how the evenets going on in her childhood, and her time a a Jehovas Witness inspired her to write. For example, her mother was always encourageing her to read and write as much as she could. Also, after she left the Jehovas Witness she realized how out of touch she was, and how much her culture had expanded without her knowledge.

  37. A good arguable statement about Richard Wright is that his novels inspired many and made African American life, known and informed people the truth about why their lives are and were that way. I plan on making my thesis statment by looking at my notes andseeing what direction I want to go with taking about a part of his life and making a good point with good arguments.

  38. A good arguable thesis statement would revolve around how Brooks wrote during segregation and rasicm. I plan on forming my thesis statement on her background, environment, books, and time she wrote.

  39. I am writing about Ralph Ellison. I think a good arguable statement on him would be how he thought about black writers. Also how he would overcome his obstacles in life with him being a black writer. He had a tough childhood because of his race. That is what made him who he was though. Because of that he became a writer and he never held back. He expressed how he felt and what story he wanted to tell.

  40. My agruable statement on nikki giovanni is that. She was inspired by the likes of malcom x, Dr.Martin Luther King and Tupac. My first reason for that is that she was big reason for the civil rigths movement. Also she got a tatto on her arm that says "Thug Life" and she was inspired by tupac.

  41. A good arguable research topic on James Brown would have to deal with his deep poverty and the racism that he grew up in. He became a top hit artist due to his inspiration of his upbringing. He created many songs that talked about his past and different ways to get throught it. He wrote inspirational songs such as “Say It Loud- I'm Black and I'm Proud." I plan on formulating my thesis by saying that his motive for writing his songs were his childhood memories. This is a very strong argument and can be supported with many details of his childhood.

  42. A nice statement would probably be that countee cullens work had revolved around the religous views a racial opinions he had been around his whole life. Mainly racial views since almost all of his peoms hint about slavery. Some hint in with men reaping the rewards that others have sowed. Another poem the black christ he wrote about god allowing the suffering that many blacks endured. Many peolpe dont actsully know what his childhood was like except for the common things. the is a mystery in his past and his work shows an influence between race and religion so its easy to sat that was his inspiration.

  43. An arguable statement on Rita Dove might be how her daughter growing up affected her. She wrote a few poems on mother-daughter bonding. She compares her daughter to a God. She writes about how her daughter was raped by Hades and how she mourns over it. By the end of the poem she realizes that mourning over it won't change a thing and she shouldn't even bother with it.

  44. I am still not sure about what to write in my thesis statement for Dizzy Gillespie, since he was quite an interesting person and did some really unusual things in his late years. He was a great jazz trumpet player and had amazing achievements. Yet I don't seem to understand his music style, bop, a new type of jazz created by him very well. It's kind of hard to understand the meanings presented in his works because I don't know very much about jazz music, and most of his music works are instrumental and all sound similar. But I am indeed very interested in his personal views on racism, inequality of different races, and the society in general. He published his autobiography and mentioned about his experience of running for the president and there were quotes of him complaining how the society did not provide enough equality and protection for African Americans. I am also curious about how his music was accepted and understood by people when at the time segregation was still a firm barrier between different races, and what inspired him to create a music style. I am planning to get a clue out of all these elements that I am interested in and incorporate them into my thesis statement. It would probably be something about the effect of segregation on Dizzy Gillespie's music and his life, such as how that gave Dizzy Gillespie a more global perspective, made him more accepting towards other races and embraced different types of music styles later in his works and worked with musicians from different places as well.

  45. A good argument about gloria Naylor is the way she writes her books. She trys to show the difficaults both African Americans and woman went through. I plan to back this up with telling how when Naylor was younger she had so many favorite writers, but soon found that every single one was either White or Male. So she made it her goal to become a writer to prove a point. That African American Woman are just as good a writer as any other person.

  46. Ralph Waldo Ellison was an African-American in the Merchant Marine. During this time he worked on a novel known as "Invisible Man", a tale of a man in search of his place in society. In "Invisible Man" he goes through the eyes of an African-American who goes through a lot of issues to "succeed" in society. This book can also be seen as a sort of reflection of his life due to his tough child-hood and of his life-style.

  47. My thesis statement i think is "Zora Neal Hurston showed through her novels that African Americans embraced rural white society but still retained an essance of thier folk culture for Hati,Jamacia, and the rural south. I can back this up with most of my resources. You can see this idea in her main book Thier eyes are watchning god.I can also use her biography to show these ideas. I think this thesis statement is very secefic and not generlazied. My other resource I can use is the biography written by an author on ebsco.
