  3. I'm learning that Gloria Naylor was a bold and influential woman. She was born in the time period where sexism and racism were at its peak. She was very moptivational and wrote many books on the effects of racism and sexism. She wrote about African Americans because she felt as if there were not enough books written about them in Ameruican literature. Most women at this time didn't stand up for themselves due to society's outlook on them; Gloria was different. She fought for herself and other women among and also stood up for African Americans. She educated the people who judged them by writing. This move was very brave for an African American woman.

He was adopted in his early years by Reverend Frederick A. and Carolyn Belle. No one really knows when exactly when he was adopted, or how long he knew this people. To add to that, no one really knows where Countee was born. People argue New York City, Baltimore, and Louisville. Countee stuck with that he was born in New York City, but his college transcript and his close friends said that he was born in Louisville. Like I said he is a very mysterious man. He went to New York University where he became a Poet, anthologist, novelist, translator, and a children's writer. He lived his life with most of those backrounds. 23. I am learning a lot about Ralph Ellison. I have been learning how he came about and how he became a writer. Before he became a writer he was a trumpet player and composer. I also am learning about where he is from and what he has accomplished. There are also many problems with his early life, like when his father died when he was only three years old.I think the biggest thing I am learning about is why he wrote his books and how he felt about the world. I think that, that information will help me with my thesis.

When he was four, he started preforming with his dad and uncle until he was old enough to go solo. I have a lot of information that can form a thesis. 25. My person that I'm researching is Richard Wright. So far, the interesting facts that I've learned about him is that he is a writer/poet, worked many jobs in his life, and rised through poverty as an African American. The information that I've been reading has basically informed me that his life experiences portray through his writings, and that he also tried to get Americans to realize the life of Afican Americans, and that the way they treated them cause certain African Americans to act the way they do.

  26. My research paper is on Gloria Naylor. Until I started doing research, I never even knew who this woman was. I have found out many interesting things about her. I have found that the book "the women of Brewster Place" was what got her noticed as a writer. The book tells the stories of black women. It shows how they all have to over come different things in their lives and they all have different experiences. I think that in my paper I'm going to link this novel and the events that transpire in it to what was going on in America concerning racism throughout Naylor's life. She was born in the year 1950. I've done further research on what was happening througout the 50's and 60's and have found many things that could have inspired her novel.

  28. Billie Holiday's songs not only reflected her own life and harships, but african american's difficulties in the United States. Billie Holiday's life was extremely hard. She was raped at the age of ten, became a prostitute at thirteen, and was addicted to drugs and alcohol her entire life, causing her death. For instance, Billie's song "Strange Fruit" was about the racism faced by African Americans in america, and how horrible it was. She wrote the song because she hates injustice and people who commit it.

  29. what i am discovering is that countee cullen tends to be fueled by his racial compassion to show the pain and hardship endured by his ancestors at the sametime his own hardships throught an average persons life in harlem. i am still amazed however when i see his use of religion in his writings while he was homosexual himself. i wouldnt have imagined those two things together.

  32. My person is Jelly Roll Morton. He was a very famous jazz musician and claims to be the creator of jazz music in 1902. His real name is actually Ferdinand Lamothe. His parents died at a young age and he had to move in with his aunt uncle grandmother and grandfather. He was kicked out of his house by his grandmother at 12 years old and had to make a living on his own. This probably affected him and his music and could help me with the formation of my thesis.

  35. Lucille Clifton was an African American poet. She was born in New York, 1936. Clifton graduated high school at the age of 16. She enrolled at Washington College then transferred to Fredonia state college. She went for a Drama major.
Lucille's Mother died when Lucille was only 20 years old. I feel that the death of her mother open the door to a whole new section of emotion and sensitivity to Lucille. She would imply deep emotion into her works. She was awarded many of times for her poetry.

  36. The person that I am researching is a fiction writer, scriptwriter, and an essayist. She had her named legally changed in 1970 to Bambara because it was a name from a trunk from her great-grandmother. Most of the books that she has written are based off of life of the normal African American family and how their hardships affected their lives. She expresses this through short stories within her published books. Her most notorious book is "Gorilla, My Love. How she explains the life and obstacles of the African American family of the 60's, would be a great to base my thesis off of. It may give me a view into what she had seen.

She moved in with her aunt after her mother's death and that is when she began to sing. She was in a band and when the lead singer died, she took over the band, then went solo. Since then, she has made herself into a musical legend and is well known for her music.

  40. My research paper is on Louis Armstrong. Some interesting facts i have found about him are, even though he was a very famouse jazz player he was treated just like any other African American. He wasnt aloud to play in certain bars, some anouncers wouldn't even anounce his name because of his race. Another interesting fact is that even though he was treated poorly and grew up in a bad enviorment he always has a smile on his face and a great attitude. The information i can use to help make my thesis is the racism he went through.

Tupac was born in New York City and moved to Baltimore where he went to highschool and college. when he moved to California he started selling drugs and got involved in the gang life style. Tupac was killed at age 25.he was shot while in the back of a car and taken to the hospitol,he went into a coma and six days later he died. still to this day no one has figured out who murdered him but many people believe it was the workings of "Biggie Smalls" a rival rapper from the east coast. although Tupac is dead his songs are still played all of the world.

  42. My research paper will be on a famous trumpet player, Dizzy Gillespie. He was also the pioneer of a new jazz style, Bebop, also known as Bop. He was born in the early 1910's, and was very interested in music at a young age. He played for various bands and eventually formed his own. He worked with another famous contemporary jazz musician, Charlie Parker, and also a lot of the others. He started gaining success and fame in the 1940's. In his late years, he performed in various countries as a cultural mission for the U.S. The most interesting part to me was that Dizzy Gillespie tried to run for the president of United States, although he didn't succeed. He had a autobiography named To Be, Or Not... To Bop, in which he mentioned about this experience and his views on social injustice imposed to African Americans at the time. He had said that "jazz is the African Americans' own culture." I am most interested in the relations between the racial segregation/injustice at the time and Dizzy Gillespie and his music, and how his music was gradually accepted by people and spread out more when the predominant audience was White people.
