What is magic realism?  What characteristics of magic realism are represented in A Canary's Ideas?

  1. Magic Realism is a literary or artistic genre in which realistic narrative or technique are combined with surreal elements of dream or fantasy. In the story "Canary's Ideas" is a bird that in real life shouldn't be able to talk let alone have a full conversation with humans. So not only is the narrator personifying the canary bird but the author is also giving it his own ideas. Meaning, the canary looks at life threw his own eyes and defines the earth in a way that the man that purchases it doesn't even begin to think about. The canary's ideas peak a major interest in the man who purchased the bird. Now you are intertwining personification and the curiosity in the man; however this curiosity doesn't just stop at him wondering this curiosity changes him, it changes him in a way that he becomes ill and obsessed with this bird and overall the want to know how he is talking and where all these views are coming from. So all of this want to know information and a little bit of personification makes a simple term; Magic Realism.

  3. Magic Realism is a genre of fiction,in which magical elements blend with the real world. Some examples in this story are the bird. The bird can talk but in real life would not be able to. The bird not only talks but has his own view on the world and everything. The view the canary has actually makes the man think about it and almost changes his own view. The man becomes completely obssessed with the canary which shows his big interest on the bird and how he is talking, etc. Practically this whole story has to do with Magic Realism.

  4. Magic Realism is a genre of fiction in which magical elements blend with the real world. This story has a lot to do with it. One example is the bird. The bird can talk and has his own opinion on the world. It actually starts making the narrator second guess his opinion. He starts to become completely obssessed with finding out how this bird talks and thinks. The man starts completely changing. This is all a big example of Magic Realism.

  6. Magic realism is using real life settings and possibilities unreal characteristics to progress the story. In the "canary's ideas" they personify the canary by giving it the ability to speak. This allows for an unreal characteristic to feed into the major plot what is reality or what is the world. It showed the meaning of reality being that only what you can experience or see is real by using something that isn't in actual reality a talking canary. The realistic or the man couldn't comprehend what life was because he was part of reality so he needed something outside his reality to explain similar to a person reading a book the canary being the reader and the man being the man in the book. You see the man became completely obsessed with the fantasy part of the bird the part that didn't make sense to him which gave allowed for the story to hold a type of symbolic illumination to man that all the readers could take as a morale which ended up being that only what has effect what has influence what you can see smell or touch which holds power in your life is real everything else cannot be proven in existence until experienced. That's magic realism

  7. Magic Realism is its own genre in itself. It is grouped with other fictional styles. Magic Realism is when realistic elements mix with elements of dreams and/or fantasy. The bird in the story being able to talk to the guy, although to everyone else is trilling. The man listens to this bird, writes down its view of the world, and other subjects. He thinks about publishing this "ideas". All of this is mystical at the least, a perfect example of magic realism.

  8. Magic realism is like a fish tale only backwards. It has very believable ideas that make it seem like it happened and is normal, but features things that can not happen. In The Canary's Idea's, the canary represens a magic realist character. In the story, he seems to be like a philosopher that is teaching the man and having conversations with him. In reality, that would not be possible. This is how The Canary's Idea's exhibits magic realism.

  9. Magic Realism is when realistic elements mix with elements of a fantasy. In the story about the canary it is sort of magical that the bird can talk and has it's own views on the world. The way the guy studies the bird is sort of like real life. So in a way there is a talking bird and also real life that ties into the story. I feel that this story sorta explains magic realism in it's on way if you think about it. The way they story is set up is a great theme.

  10. Magic Realism is a literary or artistic genre in which realistic narrative or technique are combined with surreal elements of dream or fantasy. One of the examples from this story would be the bird. In real life, birds do not talk. In this story, the bird was talking and interacting with humans. The unrealistic characteristics about the bird kept the story more interesting. The man in the story was so fascinated that the bird could talk and actually act as if it were human. He was so eager to figure out all the birds ideas.

  11. Magic Realism is a fictional genre. It seems to be a mix between a purely fictional story with a wide use of personification. This genre is when elements of realism is mixed with elements of fantasy like dreams or allusion. Within the story "A Canary's Ideas" The man who stumbles into the store finds a Canary. He immediately feels a connection between him and the bird. But when the Canary starts to speak with him, he seems to be stunned and makes himself second guess his own opinion. The man became obsessed with the Canary's fantasy side rather than its realistic side. To me, magic realism is a way to forget the world for what it is and find something else in life to watch and enjoy, at least for a while.

  12. Magic realism has a setting and characters that could happen in actual life. Magic realism also has small amounts of things that could only happen in fantasy. For example, in "A Canary's Ideas", the man is in a street narrowly avoiding being run over by a horse drawn carriage. He avoids it by sliding into a nearby thrift shop. Those events could actually happen in real life and is believable. But, after entering the thrift shop, he meets a canary that has the ability to talk and think rationally. That could never happen in real life and purely fantasy and not realistic.

Magic realism is when fictional things are found in the real world. Magic realism is a combination of fiction and realism. The canary represents magic realism in the story. The canary talks, which does not happen in real life. Everything else in the story is normal; apart from the fact that the canary can speak.

  14. Magic realism is a genre that has elements from both realism and fantasy. It has a realistic setting yet with fantastical characters. It's combined with magical elements but at the same time presenting a believable plot. In the story A Canary's Ideas, many characteristics are represented. For example, the canary, which speaks, thinks, and even claims that he is the lord of the world, is not realistic in real life but yet here in the story it is believable. The setting, first begins at the secondhand shop, and the plot of how the narrator first encounters the bird and buys it and brings it home,is highly believable and corresponds with realism. Overall, it is a fantastical story with realistic settings and magical characters, as the humans speaking with a bird and exchanging ideas.

  15. Magic realism is real life things and puts them into unreal possibilities. In the Canary's Idea, the author gave the canary he ability to speak. He spoke true about the world and the man took a while to understnad. The man thinks about the ideads and writes them down. After he understands the ideas he completely forgets his old ideas and lives his life with the new. This is a decent example of magic realism in literature

  16. Magic realism is a genre including fiction, meaning the things that happen in the stories could never happen in real life. They are fiction. Realistic things are involved with magic like things, such as things you would dream up. Characteristics of magic realism are shown in A Canary's Ideas by the bird being able to talk and share its view points on the world. Like when the canary said the people are like his servants because they give him food and everything he needs.

  27. Magic Realism is a type of fiction in which the setting is realistic to the point that the reader can relate to it but the actions taking place in these stories are very un realistic. In the story we read in class the canary talked like a human. Which of course in real life would never happen but the fact of the canary being in an abounded shop is believable. This story is fiction but has a real life point of life itself.

  29. Magic realism is a genre of fiction into which magic elecments are thrown into a realistic plot. One element would be the bird being able to speak. The canary had a specific idea about the world. Like when the canary said that the shop owner was his servant. Or when the bird said that the world was like a big cage. Yet the canary can only talk to the buyer which is pretty strange.

  34. Magic realism is an aesthetic style or genre of fiction in which magical elements blend with the real world. "Canary's Ideas" was a story that had magic realism in it. The bird can talk in this story, realistically, that cannot happen. The entire story is mostly based off of magic realism. Without magic realism, there wouldn't really be a story because the guy get's so ammused with the fact that the bird can talk.

  35. Multiple things happened during the first two chapters in "The Seperate Peace". First Gene the narrator returns to his old school in the town of Devon. First, he really wanted to see the old hallways and also see the gym. Second, while he was walking around he returned to a old flashback to where he thought of his best friend Ginny. In this flashback he basically returns to where he was sixteen and he was back in Devon. Lastly, he thinks of when him funny jumped out of a tree.
