  1. The narrator of the story, Gene Forrester, returns to the Devon School in New Hampshire. He returns fifteen years after being a student there. He walks around the campus and notices that everything seems the same, as if a coat of varnish had been applied to the buildings. He said they kept them just as they were during the time when he attended school there. He looks back on how fearful he was in those days. In the early 1940s, while World War II raged in Europe was when he went to school there. And he decides to visit the two places that he most closely associates with that fear. The first is a marble staircase in one of the academic buildings, and the second is the river and he searches for a specific tree on its banks. He identifies his tree by a number of scars on its trunk and by the way that one of its branches sticks out over the river.
The narrative flashes back to the summer of 1942, when he was sixteen and standing at the same tree. He was there with his roommate Phineas, or Finny, and three other boys. Finny wants them to jump off a branch of the tree into the river and tries to persuade them.
Finny jumps first to show the others that it is possible. Gene finally jumped but no one else did. They all went back to the campus and by that point, Gene and Finny had become really close friends. They missed dinner throughout this entire event.

Mr. Prud’homme yells at Gene and Finny for missing dinner, but he was completely side-tracked by the way Finny talked. Finny completely got them out of trouble and they left without any type of discipline.

  2. The story begins by the Narrator returning to his old town after 15 years of not being there. The town was called Devon. He went to school there his whole life, disapeared and finally returned. He remembers everything being the same, but the same to him was scary. It was very fearful for him. The two places he wanted to visit were the staircase, and the river with a tree along it. He remember these places being very scary, and it was during World War II. He would visit the staircase, and eventually find the tree along the river because of the marks on the trunk. While he was at the tree he flashed back to summer, and it was when him and his friend jumped into the river. They went on to become very good friends. They would both miss dinner on that summer night. But Finny's fine way with words got them out of it.

  7. To sum up chapters one, and two of a separate place, we first meet Gene. Gene is telling us his journey to his old high school. He hasn't been to Devon school in fifteen years, when he entered the school he described it has a wax museum. When you see things, you don't just look at it, there is a memory behind it. For Gene the whole school was just a big memory. He had a friend that was the complete opposite of him, finny was his name. Finny and gene are jealous of each other for many odd reasons. But overall they are best friends, and they are always there for each other.

  10. Gene Forrester, the narrator of the story, returns to the Devon School in New Hampshire, fifteen years after being a student there. He walks around the campus and notices that everything seems well preserved, as if a coat of varnish had been applied to the buildings, keeping them just as they were during his time there. He reflects on how fearful he was in those days—the early 1940s, while World War II raged in Europe—and decides to visit the two places that he most closely associates with that fear. The first is a marble staircase in one of the academic buildings, which Gene decides must be made of incredibly hard stone, since the depressions created by students’ feet over the years are still shallow. After staring at these steps for a time, he goes back outside, passing the dormitories and the gymnasium, ruining his shoes as he trudges across the soggy playing fields in the rain. He eventually reaches the river and searches for a specific tree on its banks, which he locates with some difficulty in a grove of trees similar to each other. Mr. Prud’homme, a substitute teacher for the summer session, comes by the next morning to discipline Gene and Finny for missing dinner, but he is soon won over by Finny’s ebullient talkativeness and leaves without assigning a punishment. Finny decides to wear a bright pink shirt as an emblem of celebration of the first allied bombing of central Europe. Gene envies him slightly for being able to get away with wearing this color (which he says makes Finny look like a “fairy,” or homosexual); indeed, Finny seems capable of getting away with virtually anything he wants to do.
